SEA Games: Azkals U22 suffer worst finish since 2015

The Philippine Under 22 Men’s National Team concluded its 32nd Southeast Asian Games campaign with a 1-0 loss to Myanmar on Wednesday at the Smart RSN Stadium in Phnom Penh.

Thet Hein Soe’s tap-in during the 55th minute condemned Rob Gier’s side to last place in Group A, with only 1 point from a draw and three defeats.

Myanmar was even reduced to 10 men in the 83rd minute after Lat Wai Phone was dismissed for receiving a second yellow card. However, the Azkals U22 failed to capitalize on their numerical advantage.

This is the Philippines’ worst performance in the regional competition since 2015 when they failed to secure a single point in the group stage, suffering four consecutive defeats.

The Philippines also lost to Indonesia, 0-3, and drew with Cambodia, 1-1.

In contrast, Indonesia and Myanmar advanced to the semifinals with 12 and 9 points, respectively.

The host nation, Cambodia, and Timor Leste finished with 4 and 3 points, respectively, ahead of the Philippines.

Philippines XI: Kammeraad (GK), Rublico, Amirul, Aldeguer, Cariño, Peña, Muens, Leddel, Bugas, Setters, Lucero.
