The Philippine Under-22 Men’s National Football Team made a winning start to its campaign in the 33rd Southeast Asian Games, shutting out Myanmar 2-0 on Friday at the 700th Anniversary Stadium in Chiangmai, Thailand.
The victory also came on a historic day, marking the 15th anniversary of the “Miracle of Hanoi,” when the Philippines stunned Vietnam in a legendary upset.
Coach Garrath McPherson’s side drew first blood in the 19th minute, as Alex Monis expertly turned the ball into the net from close range, giving the nationals a dream start.
The win was then sealed in the 50th minute when Myanmar’s Lat Wai Phone inadvertently scored an own goal.
With this result, the Philippines jumps to the top of Group C with three points, gaining an early advantage in the race for a spot in the knockout stage, as only the group winner is guaranteed progression.
The Nationals will look to build on this momentum when they face Indonesia on Monday, while Myanmar will also take on Indonesia on Friday.
Both matches are set for a 7:00 PM (Manila time) kick-off at the 700th Anniversary Stadium.
