Another university has been hit hard by the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Multiple sources have confirmed to Tiebreaker Times that University of Perpetual Help System DALTA is temporarily shutting down the operations of its athletics department as a result of cost-cutting measures.
“Totoo po ‘yan,” said one of the sources, who requested anonymity.
“‘Yung school kasi namin ay mag-transition sa online learning kaya napagpasyahan ng aming admin na wala munang training allowance ang aming mga atleta. Total wala pa namang NCAA ngayong taon.”
The school is still committed to retaining the scholarships of all of its 400-plus student-athletes.
The source added that the Altas are encouraged to do self-training for the meantime under the supervision of their coaches, who will still be paid by the school.
Season 96 of the Grand Old League still has no opening date, as the league’s higher-ups are still playing the waiting game on the guidelines of the general community quarantine and its modified counterpart.
Perpetual, a school that joined the NCAA back in 1984, has won a total of 64 championships in both the seniors and juniors division.
It has won the seniors general championship twice from 1996-97. The Junior Altas are the reigning general champions in the high school division.
