Mitshubishi Electric Cup: Azkals suffer four-goal trashing to Thailand

The Philippine Azkals suffered yet another defeat in their AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 campaign in a 4-0 result against Thailand, Monday, at the Thammasat Stadium.

Hoping to build on the win against Cambodia, the Filipinos found themselves on the backfoot three minutes into the contest against the Thais. Teerasil Dangda found the back of the net with a header off Theerathon Bunmathan’s free kick.

Dangda would then have his second goal in the game in the 41st minute via a penalty scored past Azkals stopper Julian Schwarzer, which was awarded to the home side after Amani Aguinaldo fouled Ekanit Panya inside the Philippines’ box.

Come the second half, the War Elephants saw their lead reach a three-goal cushion in the 57th minute. Adisak Kraisorn capitalized on a Dangda assist to tap the ball home.

Six minutes later, Thailand got its fourth goal of the game when Suphanan Bureerat finished from close range.

Thailand will return to action on Thursday against Indonesia in Jakarta with kick-off scheduled at 5:30 PM Manila time.

The result allows the Thais to go on top of Group A with 6 points and a goal difference of +9 above Indonesia, which also has 6 points but a goal difference of +8.

In contrast, Josep Ferre’s men are in fourth place with 3 points on the back of one win and two losses as well as a goal difference of -1.

On the other hand, the Philippines shall take on Indonesia — which secured a 7-0 victory against Brunei earlier in the day — to end its Group A campaign on Monday, 8:30 PM, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
