Right after the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates suffered a harsh sweep in the NCAA Season 93 Seniors Basketball Finals, Mike Nzeusseu vowed that, “[He] will no longer be a nice guy.” But he meant it in a different way.
Friday evening, the Cameroonian student-athlete scattered a 16-point, 16-rebound double-double, on top of four blocks and two assists. And according to coach Topex Robinson, most of his prized center’s success on the court so far this season has stemmed from the bane of their past.
“He felt the pain of last season.
“He really is putting in the work. I think he deserves to really get that recognition. He’s just all business. He wanna make sure that whatever result of that season, he made sure that he gave his best. So far, he’s really been solid on our team,” recalled Robinson.
But aside from gaining inspiration from their recent setback, Robinson also noted that what he admires about Nzeusseu this season is the change of outlook that has drastically influenced not just his performance, but also his life.
“Gone are the days when you’ll see Mike Nzeusseu going out partying and then, going to clubs. Now you’ll see him, working on his game.
“You cannot just ignore that fact that he really is working. So, he really deserves to get mad at his teammates and even get mad at me because of the work that he’s been doing. I appreciate that. I would love to have my import as one of the hardworking players in my team,” furthered Robinson after Lyceum’s 94-81 win over the Mapua Cardinals.
When asked about the catalyst of the Lyceum big man’s change, coach Topex confessed that Nzeusseu’s lifestyle makeover began when he tied the knot and exchanged vows with the love of his life.
“It all started when he got married,” Robinson admitted. “I guess the support of the better half is there for him. Sobrang laki ng minature niya. He took in in stride.”
Moreover, aside from the love he receives from his wife, his love for the game and the burning desire to make a living out of his passion has made Nzeusseu more assiduous. And no matter what road he may pave in the future after his final year, Robinson assures that he will do everything in his power to propel his ward forward.
“He really wants to get big, he wants to get notice also. Kasi nga ang situation ni Mike, he’s not like Cj [Perez] or [MJ] Ayaay, sa kanya kasi he could only get a chance overseas Europe or wherever,” the youthful coach said. “That’s why you’ll also notice Mike, this year he’s been shooting three’s kasi I don’t want him to be a big because he’s never gonna be a big overseas to be an import eh. So, I’ll take it. He’s gonna take shots because he’s working on his outside shots also. So, that’s the deal that we had.
“He really is a different person now, a different individual. Sobrang positive teammate.”
