The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws continue their uphill climb as they outmatched the still winless University of the East Lady Red Warriors, 5-0, and took their second straight win, Saturday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall.
Top singles player Michal Duquilla commenced the rout for FEU with a swift 21-11, 21-17 win over Lyra Rosal in the first singles match. From a close start in the opening game, the senior Lady Tam pulled away in both sides of the interval to get the frame. Duquilla used this momentum to lead big in the second frame and never looked back.
Irish Molina finally took his first win of the season to double the Tamaraws’ lead. The newbie outlasted Heide Rosal in three games, 21-19, 16-21, 21-17. It was a battle of wits as both Rosal and Molina tried to outsmart each other. In the end, errors in the crucial stages of the match, particularly in the last two frames made it hard for the Lady Warrior to get the match on her favor.
The long-time duo of Duquilla and Maridel Rivera took care of the first doubles match for the Morayta-based shuttlers as they clinched the team’s second straight win. The experience of the FEU pair showed in their masterful 21-10, 21-15 win over Pamela Fernandez and Ericka Labay.
Klowie Garcia and Trisha Pomar pushed FEU’s lead to 4-0 in the second doubles match as they finish off the Rosal sisters in three games, 15-21, 21-17, 21-19. Rivera then closed out the tie with a convincing 21-5, 21-8 win over Labay in the final singles match.
The Lady Tams (2-2) face the defending champions University of the Philippines (4-0) in hopes of keeping the Final 4 bid alive. On the other hand, the Lady Red Warriors shoot for their first win against National University (2-2).
