Despite having just nine events for Season 84, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines will still crown a general champion.
Events slated are men’s basketball; women’s volleyball; cheerdance; men’s and women’s 3×3; men’s beach volleyball; poomsae; and men’s and women’s chess.
“Yes, we will have a general championship,” said season president Emmanuel Calanog of La Salle.
“Because some of our schools who don’t participate in all the [events], this may be their chance to actually win the general championship.”
Only Ateneo, La Salle, University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas field teams in all the events pre-pandemic.
This time though, Calanog said “six or seven” schools, without naming them, will participate in all the nine events taking place.
The general championship is decided by the overall points the schools amassed after the season.
In each event, the first place receives 15 points, second place gets 12 points, and third makes 10 points. The fourth (eight), fifth (six), sixth (four), seventh (two), and eighth (one) also get respective points.
There was no general champion in Season 82, which stopped due to the pandemic with the second semester events just starting.
UST was the last school to earn the most coveted general championship, winning it in Season 81 with 282 points, just above this season’s host DLSU at 260.
