Less than a day after Carlos Yulo’s historic gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games Paris 2024, Angelica Poquiz Yulo talked to a radio station, blaming the financial incentives fiasco and his son’s girlfriend, Chloe San Jose, for the Filipino gymnast’s strained relationship with his family.
After days of speculation and multiple interviews with Angelica across various media, Carlos posted a TikTok video on Tuesday afternoon to share his side of the story.
Carlos clarified that he never received his incentives from his gold and bronze medal haul at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, as his mother took the money without his consent.
In addition to his winnings, Angelica also took most of Carlos’ monthly allowance for gymnastics training.
While Carlos acknowledged that his relationship with San Jose sparked the feud, the nine-time SEA Games gold medalist said that Angelica judged his partner harshly without making an effort to get to know and accept her into the Yulo family.
Carlos added that, contrary to his mother’s claims, San Jose does not ‘leech’ off him as she has her own source of income.
“Unang-una pa lang, ayaw na niya kay Chloe kahit hindi pa niya po nakikita or nakikilala in person, and mas nagkalabuan po kami nung naglagay ako ng boundaries sa relationship ko dahil pinaglaban ko po si Chloe dahil gusto ko po siya ‘eh,” the two-time Olympian bared.
Carlos revealed that San Jose’s family created a group chat to address Angelica’s issues with the gymnast’s partner, which Angelica ultimately left after the ‘heated’ discussion.
“Even though my family knew na marami na siyang pinopost, my family still welcomed them, treated them with respect, and with no judgment na pinaringgan nila yung side ng mom mo about what she said about me and our relationship,” San Jose said.
While the hurtful words of his mother are still fresh in Carlos’ mind, the 10-time Asian Championships gold medalist wishes nothing but the best for Angelica and hopes their feud can come to an end.
