The Philippines positioned itself for a spot in the men’s team final of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Artistic Gymnastics competition after topping Subdivision 1 on Monday at the Nagoya General Gymnasium (Rainbow Hall).
The Filipinos finished with a total of 232.093 points to lead the three-team field heading into the afternoon session, which features favorites Japan, China, and South Korea.
The team final is scheduled for Wednesday at 12 noon.
Karl Eldrew Yulo led the Philippines with a total score of 77.264, highlighted by his top mark of 13.433 on the horizontal bar.
The Asian Games debutant also placed second on floor exercise with 13.966, just behind his elder brother Carlos, who posted a massive 14.600.
Carlos, meanwhile, registered a total of 75.465 to finish just behind Eldrew and currently sits in second place.
The two-time Olympic champion endured some struggles during the qualifications, including falls on the vault and horizontal bar, but bounced back in the parallel bars, where his 14.266 currently stands as the leading score.
Miguel Besana contributed 70.898 points, including the Philippines’ best score on vault at an average of 13.933, which currently ranks third.
Zachary Nuñez and Justin Ace De Leon completed the Philippine team, which is seeking its first-ever Asian Games medal.
