Stallion Laguna blew a two-goal cushion and drew 2-2 against Malaysian side Terengganu in the 2023-2024 AFC Cup group stage Thursday at the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin Stadium.
The Philippines Football League club looked set to win its first match in the continental competition this season when it earned an early two-goal lead.
Griffin McDaniel drew first blood for Stallion with a free kick six minutes into the game. Junior Ngong Sam then doubled his side’s lead in the 41st minute with a right-footed shot.
Unfortunately, things went south for coach Ernie Nierras’ men.
Sony Nordé gave the home team hope with a 45+2 minute goal from close range. Nordé then provided the assist for Adisak Kraisorn’s 90+1 minute header that saved Terengganu’s skin.
Stallion lamented what might have been had they seen things through. This was its third game without a win in the tournament.
The Laguna-based side started the tourney with a 2-5 loss to Bali United last September 20 and followed it up with a 9-1 loss to Central Coast Mariners last October 4.
Stallion remained bottom of Group G with 1 point. In contrast, Terengganu sat in second place with 5 points behind one win and two defeats.
Both teams will face each other again on November 4 at 4 p.m. with Stallion as the host team.
