Lyceum proves it can close out without CJ Perez

When CJ Perez transferred to Lyceum of the Philippines University, the Pirates hadĀ themselves a bonafide star. For years, Perez has been known as a do-it-all forward and, more importantly, a closer — one thing the institution has lacked since entering the NCAA back in 2009.

For 11 games, Perez has led Lyceum to their best start in school history, tearing through the NCAA with norms of 18.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.5 steals.

But on Friday afternoon, the Pirates proved that they can win without the 23-year-old utility forward in the clutch.NCAA-93-AU-LPU-JC-Marcelino-4371 Lyceum proves it can close out without CJ Perez Basketball LPU NCAA News - philippine sports news

“The reminder here is this is not CJ’s team. No, it’s all of us.

“We love CJ on the team but CJ knows also that we could win without him,” admitted Lyceum head coach Topex Robinson after the Pirates escaped with their unblemished streak intact against the Arellano Chiefs, 94-92.

Perez may have sparked Lyceum’s rally from a 13-point deficit with 4:15 left in the game, but with just two minutes left on the clock, he fouled out, resulting free throws for Rence Alcoriza that put Arellano up 89-88.

With the game on the line and without their leader on the floor, MJ Ayaay, Jaycee Marcelino, and the rest of the Pirates stepped up, showing confidence that they can still do it. While Ayaay provided the offense, the rest locked down the Chiefs to secure the win.

“At the end of the day, it’s the trust you give to them e. they’re gonna make mistakes maha-highblood ka, but they also want to win,” commended Robinson of his troops.

“Just having that common cause and belief na we’re gonna play our basketball.”

And the experience the Pirates gained in this victory will only result in a much more dangerous Lyceum team.NCAA-93-AU-LPU-JV-Marcelino-Nzeusseu-4506 Lyceum proves it can close out without CJ Perez Basketball LPU NCAA News - philippine sports news

“Coming into the game what we’ve shared with them is about bond and connection. That’s gonna solidify our campaign going through shared adversity,” Robinson shared.

“It’s really important we stick it out together and hoping we’re gonna come out winners.”
