‘Inspired’ Kevin Alas hopes early preparation pays dividends

Everything seems to be going right for Kevin Alas

The 25-year-old was named to the national team pool last June while his club team NLEX Road Warriors are in the midst of its season-best three-game winning streak. And on Wednesday night, the second-generation cager could proudly go home and say to his dad, Louie, that he is 3-0 against his dad’s team, Alaska, this season.

“Oo nga e, 3-0 na kami, di ko alam swerte lang, swerte,” quipped Alas after NLEX’s 112-104 win.

The third-year guard out of Letran was a vital cog in the Road Warriors’ conference-opening win, scoring 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists. Alas was quick to credit NLEX’s early preparations for the conference as the reason why they went guns blazing against Alaska.

“Malaking bagay yung we started early. June 7 pa lang nagstart na kami ng practice,” the resident of Las Pinas City shared.

“Yung ibang teams nagbabakasyon pa nun so I think malaking bagay para sa amin yun na siyempre nagbubuild yung chemistry namin.”

Moreover, the addition of veterans Larry Fonacier, JR Quinahan, and Alex Mallari gave direction to the young team, the young gun added.

“Maganda din yun addition nila Alex, Larry, JR, and Kenneth [Ighalo] kasi with larry, he’s been a leader sa amin lalo na sa akin kinakausap niya ako parati,” furthered Alas as NLEX figured in two separate transactions to nab the four players.

Still, Alas is hoping that they can be consistent all throughout the conference to make up for their two last place finishes last conference.

“It’s just one game but we’re happy. Ayun lang, we need to be consistent lang kasi nangyari na nung All-Filipino na we won our first game then we lost five straight,” Alas closed.

“We shouldn’t be confident na nanalo kami ngayon, lots of improvement pa.”
