A year ago, Mika Reyes and the core of the 2015-16 De La Salle University Lady Spikers were part of debuting PSL team, F2 Logistics Cargo Movers. After conquering the UAAP, they were able to replicate the feat in a different stage, winning the All-Filipino Conference.
Sometimes though, one has to carve their own path.
During the off-season, Reyes signed on with the Petron Blaze Spikers, leaving something familiar for something new.
Thursday night, the 22-year-old faced the inevitable as Petron faced the Lady Spikers-bannered Cargo Movers.
Reyes admitted that she needed to compose herself, treating the game as strictly business — nothing personal.
“Professional naman tayo inside the court pero outside the court, wala namang awkwardness,” the 6-foot middle blocker shared.
F2 Logistics though were on the verge of sweeping Petron, taking a quick 2-0 lead.
“Yung mga set na iyon, hindi naman kami na-down. We were just enjoying the game lang.
“Sinabi namin sa mga sarili namin na hindi pa naman tapos ang laro then nag-all out na lang kami,” the National Team skipper reflected.
And all-out they went as Petron was able to turn back F2 Logistics to secure their opening day win and give Reyes the emotional win. But the native of Pulilan, Bulacan knows that this is just the beginning.
“This is just the beginning. First game pa lang naman, marami pang puwedeng mangyari sa middle of the tournament,” said Reyes, who finished the game with six markers.
“Pero siyempre I’m still happy na nanalo kami.”
One of the things she is wary about is how coach Ramil de Jesus will plot the F2 Logistics’ comeback.
“Babawi sila. Alam ko ‘yan kasi dating team ko rin ‘yan,” the La Salle alumna stressed.
“Alam ko ang La Sallian attitude, especially pag galing sa talo.”
For sure, coach Ramil and the Cargo Movers will have something special in store when Round Two comes around. And Mika Reyes will be ready for it.
