By leading less fancied Arellano University to the recent NCAA Finals, Jerry Codinera is likely to be put among the candidates for a coaching position for the national team competing for the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore next year as well as the SEABA tournaments.
The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas has created a search and select committee which will be in charge of naming coaches who will be included in the shortlist of candidates for the coaching position in the national team both in the elite and non-elite tournaments.
Included in the elite tournaments are the Olympics, the World Cup, the Asian Championship, which serves as qualifying tournament for both these events, and the Asian Games, which will be participated by players from the PBA.
The non-elite tournaments are the SEABA and Southeast Asian Games, which will be joined by the country’s top amateur and collegiate players.
Codinera’s name has been thrown around as one of the candidates along with collegiate champion coaches Boyet Fernandez and Eric Altamirano.
“To be named as a coach, it will be an honor,” Codinera told Tiebreaker Times. “Who would turn it down?”
Codinera has played in national teams in the past as an amateur player and as a pro. He would not hesitate to serve the national team in a different capacity this time.
“I’m willing to help in any capacity. Coaching the top amateur players would be an honor. I played in the SEA Games two or three times before as a player and it was a great honor,” he added.
