Petron earns convincing sweep over Foton for fourth win

The Petron Blaze Spikers rolled to their fourth win in a row, breezing past the Foton Tornadoes, 25-12, 25-10, 25-23, to remain atop the Philippine Superliga Invitational standings at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Blaze Spikers outclassed the Tornadoes in every category, notably surrendering only 17 errors to Foton’s 28.

The Tornadoes only showed up in the third set, taking momentary two-point leads and a late 23-22 advantage. A clutch smash from Aiza Pontillas tied the match at 23, setting up two Foton attack errors to end the match.

Maizo-Pontillas towed Petron with 11 points, the only player on double-digits, while National University standout Mina Aganon added eight.

“Ang talagang in-expect namin na magiging close ‘yung game. Good thing nasunod ‘yung gameplan namin, tumaas ‘yung pursyento ng service at receive namin,” said Petron head coach Shaq Delos Santos, adding that his team did not approach this game as a rivalry game.

Grethcel Soltones managed seven points for Foton. Skipper Dindin Santiago-Manabat was limited to three markers.

Petron (4-0) finish their elimination round campaign on Thursday, March 23, when they face the Generika-Ayala Lifesavers at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Foton (2-2) take on the Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors on the same day.
