Aprilia Manganang has moved on.
In the 2015 Southeast Asian Games, the Philippines Women’s National Team caused a stir when in the buildup to its Group match against Indonesia. Philippine officials questioned the eligibility of Manganang, questioning her gender due to her physique.
The recipient of negative online fallout, Manganang overcame the Philippines’ protest and led Indonesia to a straight-set victory.
“I wasn’t too upset about it. It motivated me,” the 24 year old told Tiebreaker Times about the incident through a translator.
In a favorable turn of events, the Indonesian spiker got a chance to show Filipinos up close just how good she is.
Manganang headlines Indonesian club team Jakarta Elektrik who is one of the participants in the on-going AVC AWCC being held at the Alonte Sports Arena in Biñan.
Displaying her supreme leaping and hitting ability, Manganang scored 20 points and basked in the awe of local fans in their opening day loss to Kazakstan’s Altay VC.
“It was unexpected and it really made happy,” said Manganang of the positive reception. “I’m okay with what happened before and I’m glad I got the chance to play here.”
Asked if she would be willing to play as an import here for one of the local club teams, she replied:
“Yes, definitely.”
