Last year’s silver medalist and this year’s Philippine Taekwondo Nationals gold medalist, the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Jins open their UAAP season with a 6-1 series win over the Far Eastern University Tamaraw Jins in a rematch of the Philippine Taekwondo Nationals finals.
The sole-win for the Tamaraw Jins was the win of finweight Ariel Bacud over Rryel Ramirez. Bacud dominated both rounds connecting on 7 points from a string of body and head kicks in a dominant 15-3 win. UST standouts Rhayzor Catris and Paul Romero secured wins in their flyweight and bantamweight matches respectively to give UST a 2-1 advantage going into the featherweight match. UST’s Joaquin Mendoza and FEU’s Elijah Marcelino would have a 3-all deadlock to extend the match into the golden round. Mendoza would hit a body kick on Marcelino to gain the golden point and win the match. UAAP S76 Lightweight runner-up JM Ramos would rally in the 2nd round of his match against Clint Ferrer in an 8-7 win to secure the series for the Tiger Jins. Rookie Aries Capispisan and Cedrick Perez defeated FEU’s Jayson Samson and Ivan Norombaba by points in their respective match-ups.
