National University forward Afril Bernardino is expected to win her second straight UAAP women’s basketball season Most Valuable Player award, after helping the Lady Bulldogs to a 14-0 elimination round sweep in Season 78.
Bernardino averaged 14.5 PPG, 8 RPG, 2.5 APG, 2.2 SPG, and 2.1 BPG in 13 games to carry the defending champions to a second consecutive outright finals appearance.
The Perlas Pilipinas mainstay amassed 70.62 overall statistical points, topping the field for the second year in a row.
Ateneo de Manila center Danica Jose placed a distant second with 62.57 SPs, helping the Lady Eagles to a 6-8 record and a Final Four berth in her last playing year.
Jose had numbers of 13.8 PPG, 11 RPG, and a league-leading 2.6 BPG in 14 games.
Rounding out the top five are University of the East point guard Cherry Ano-os (60.92), University of Sto. Tomas center Maica Cortes (60.93) and De La Salle forward Ara Abaca (54.57).
Rookie Jack Danielle Animam is poised to win the top newcomer prize, having finished 10th in the overall statistical points tally with 46.79. The Lady Bulldogs center averaged 5.9 PPG and 8.5 RPG.
Last year, another Lady Bulldog, Ria Nabalan, won Rookie of the Year honors.
