Out of all the teams in the coming tournament, the Lady Stallions may have experienced the most turbulence en route to forming a team. Insiders claims that there were several last-minute adjustments apart from multiple name changes, as the team struggled to find a company that will back them (during the draft, they went under the name Shacman before settling on their final moniker at a press conference earlier this week). Not to be confused with last season’s Mane ‘n Tail (now Philips Gold) team, this squad is apparently under a different management.
Nevertheless, they’re here and they’ve assembled quite a formidable squad. Taking the reins for the Lady Stallions is, Head Coach, Rosemarie Prochina, a key member of the ’93 National Team that won the country’s last SEA Games medal. With now PSL President, Tats Suzara manning the helm of that team, the Philippines thwarted a heavily favored Thailand squad. Prochina has since played of the Philippine Navy, and will look to instill a winning tradition into the up-and-coming program.
The Lady Stallions have employed numerous former Cignal HD Spikers, including the aforementioned former NCAA MVP, Honey Royse Tubino. A National team mainstay, Tubino is an all-around volleyball wunderkind who will be relied on to get her team out of pressure situations. Joining her are former Lady Altas teammates Nori Diaz and Arianne Argarin in the Cignal exodus, that resembles Generika’s lineup. These longtime teammates should already have valuable familiarity that will be key in forging further chemistry with the rest of the team.
Former Lady Falcon and current Lady Stallion team captain, Jill Gustillo not only provides leadership, but a steady presence wherever she finds herself in the court. Gustillo is best remembered from a near UAAP championship run with Adamson in 2008. Rounding out the team is Mane ‘n Tail’s first round pick, CSB standout and Middle Blocker Therese Veronas, and former Cignal HD Spikers, Lilet Mabbayad and Danika Genrauli, a definite impact player from Cebu.
Their second round pick and former Lady Tam, Sam Dawson along with recent Adamson graduate, Marleen Cortel round out the young core of the Lady Stallions. Coach Prochina has admitted in interviews that this season might be a struggle for her team, but she remains optimistic due to their attitude and work ethic. The Lady Stallions may not have what it takes to overcome some of the more stacked teams in the conference but with a highly experienced coaching staff and up-and-coming players, it may not be long until Mane ‘n Tail’s work-in-progress to actually work.
