Losing a former MVP and National Team standout would be a huge hump to try to get over. Former NCAA MVP, Honey Royse Tubino carried much of the leadership and offensive burden for the team in last season’s All-Filipino Cup. Now that she’s listed to play for Mane ‘N Tail, finding a bandage for the open wound she left will be key for Coach Sam Acaylar’s HD Spikers.
Looking to carry the torch will be another former MVP, FEU standout, Cherry May Vivas. The enigmatic Season 72 MVP showed flashes of her impeccable collegiate form in her first season of pro volleyball, but Vivas was still a step below her usual dominant play. Another year of competition should benefit her.
The name Michelle Sedogine may not ring a bell for most of you, as she played in a time when UAAP volleyball games were still played at the Blue Eagle Gym. But ask anyone who played volleyball in the mid-2000s about her, and watch them either quiver in fear or let out a snarky giggle. Watching Segodine play for the classic, Mommy Dulce of the Lady Falcons was like watching a hyper Taz from the Looney Tunes, whirling around. Had she played in this era, she might have already piled up her share of haters and endless internet threads about how she’s bad for the sport. She was also a pretty damn good volleyball player, and while her extended hiatus might hinder her from dominating the competition, look for Segodine to bring her highly combustible competitive spirit to this young Cignal squad. Speaking of an oft-forgotten era, former Lady Bulldog, Mervic Mangui will also be a key cog for Coach Acaylar’s team. Mangui starred for NU in its pre-Santiago era.
Still, the burden of getting this team’s offense flowing, falls on the decorated former Lady Stag, Setter Charisse Ancheta while Coach Acaylar’s UPHSD scrubs, defensive ace, Jheck Dionela, and towering Middle Blockers Coleen Bravo and Lourdes Clemente will be vital to the continued success of thr HD Spikers. Though these Lady Altas are still young, their familiarity with the coach and defensive prowess should not be overlooked. CSB’s Janine Navarro, rounds out the nice core of NCAA players at Coach Acaylar’s disposal. There is a definite hope around the organization that the team they assembled will bring them back to success; which they experienced in the first seasons of the PSL, when they finished second in consecutive conferences. However, given that 60% of the team are new faces, a return to the playoffs is a more realistic goal for the HD Spikers as the rest of the league had a very busy offseason themselves of adding key pieces.
