Adamson averts another UE upset, snaps two-game skid

Avoiding the same deflating fate as their first round match-up, the Adamson University Lady Falcons avenged their loss to the University of the East Lady Warriors, 19-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-16, 15-12, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Trading convincing set wins, both squads limped into the fifth set without any momentum. The Lady Falcons found an 8-4 cushion after consecutive UE errors. The Lady Warriors climbed back, tying the set at 8 before collapsing again and allowing the Lady Falcons to push ahead 12-8.

The Lady Warriors then again made a run, coming within one, 12-11, after what Adamson head coach Air Padda called controversial calls.

“We can’t have calls like that in the fifth set, when it’s crucial. We can’t have those types of mistakes decide the match,” sighed Padda, expressing her dismay stemming from their loss to UP.

The Lady Falcons eventually closed the match with captain Jema Galanza pulling in two of Adamson’s last two points.

Padda was relieved that her team got over adversity as the Lady Falcons played without starting open hitter Chiara Permentilla.

“I thought the team did a good job fighting, especially in the fifth set, not letting UE go on point runs and keeping the lead,” added Padda.

Jema Galanza tallied 22 points with 22 digs and 11 receptions to lead the Lady Falcons. Opposite hitter Mylene Paat added 18 markers.

The Lady Falcons (4-6) take on the NU Lady Bulldogs (6-3) on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Mary Ann Mendrez topped the Lady Warriors with 17 pointz. Libero Kath Arado battled through a sprained right ankle suffered in the second set and still managed 32 digs and 23 receptions.
