Continuing the action and suspense delivered by the male fencers of the six universities, they once again took to the piste on the afternoon of the second day, December 5, to once again duel in the name of their respective campuses as well as to grab hold of the coveted gold for the men’s foil category.
Keeping the crown: individual Foil
Occurring at the same time as the women’s sabre matches, the men of all universities gave it all they’ve got to notch a victory under their universities name. Regardless of the equal effort put out by the fencers of all six universities, two universities, FEU and UE, proved to be far superior than the rest as both had one fencers who easily breezed through their opponents.
The quarterfinals, however, held a far different wind for FEU as they were effectively denied by a resurging FEU from going any further after their initially dominating fencer, John Conception, was effectively put down by UP’s Rafael Rondain in a close 15-13 match to the delight of the UP crowd. Sadly for the Diliman based fencers, however, the victory of Rondain was effectively cut short by UE’s Michael Nicanor 15-10 to secure a ticket to the finals to face off his comrade Nathaniel Perez who similarly won over his assignments on the other side of the bracket.
Gaining retribution
While failing to advance to any of the medal matches in the first day’s men’s epee division, DLSU’s Gian Rodriguez action in the foil effectively pushed him all the way to the semis to secure a medal as he defeats UST’s Alexander Macaraig in a close 15-13. Sadly for the DLSU camp, however, Rodriguez’s quest for the gold was put to stop by UE’s Nathaniel Perez 15-10 to make him go home with the gold.
Ultimately, UE’s Nathaniel Perez triumphs over his comrade, Michael Nicanor 15-3 to take home gold while his comrade takes home the silver respectively; FEU’s Rondain and DLSU’s Rodriguez on the other hand completes the podium finishers for the foil category as they both share the bronze.
