Sofia Frank made history after her 53.30 points in the short program smashed record books in the 2021 CS Finlandia Trophy at Espoo Metro Areena, Espoo, Finland, Saturday.
The result became the highest score established by a Filipino female skater for the said segment of a competition in an ISU-sanctioned event.
The 16-year-old previously ended with 47.65 in her first-ever ISU tournament as a senior for the country – the Nebelhorn Trophy. That qualified her for the Four Continents Championships for the next year.
Frank opened her program strong with not just a jump, but a jump combination – a triple lutz-triple flip combo. Unfortunately, she had her feet down, which caused her some precious GOEs. Nonetheless, she saved the routine in the following triple loop jump and her combination spins.
The Colorado Springs Invitational bronze medalist for the second straight time, however, made the crowd dance in her graceful interpretation of Donna Summer’s disco hit Last Dance. She scored sevens in performance, composition, and interpretation from one judge. She eventually ended with a 24.09 for the program components score.
Elizaveta Tuktamysheva leads the pack along with two other Russians in Alena Kostornaia and Kamila Valieva. Tuktamysheva also set a new personal best of 81.53 to best 26 others.
The free skate is scheduled on Sunday with Frank scheduled for 5:45 PM (10:45 PM, Manila time).
