Sofia Frank ended the short program of the 2022 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships’ short program in 14th place, scoring 52.74, Friday morning (Manila time) at the Tondiraba Ice Hall in Tallinn, Estonia.
The 16-year-old, who is debuting in this regional tournament, could have gotten a new personal and Philippine record of at least 55 points if not for a downgrade in one of her planned elements.
Frank intended to open the program with her favorite triple lutz-triple toe loop combo, which has a base value of 10.10, but instead settled for a double toe loop to close the jump series to garner 7.37 for the element — 7.20 on base value with 0.17 GOE.
Nonetheless, the rest of her technical element scores went up from that of the Finlandia Trophy, highlighted by a well-executed double axel at the second half of the routine. The result is a final technical score of 28.62.
The Filipino upstart likewise got the small crowd dancing with another great rendition of Last Dance by Donna Summers. The judges were similarly impressed — giving her high 5’s on skating skills and transition and 6’s on performance, composition, and interpretation, for a total of 24,12.
Frank will try to close out her 4CC debut in style as she takes to the ice again on Saturday at 1:32 p.m. (7:32 p.m., PH time) for the free skate.
