Sofia Frank showed up in the free skate to place in the 13th spot in the 2021 Santa Claus Cup on Thursday (Friday, Philippine time) at the Budapest Practice Rink, Hungary.
Her technical score of 52.21 in the free skate was way beyond the minimum technical score of 38 needed, and thus giving her a spot in the next year’s World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. The 16-year-old standout consequently finished with a 99.94 for the said portion.
After running through several mishaps in her short program, Frank turned it around in the free skate with a strong opening jump of a triple lutz-triple toe loop combo.
She had some problems on the following triple flip, but she managed to nail her succeeding jumps including a three-jump series of double axel-double toe loop-double loop. The program then ended with well-executed spins.
Frank’s interpretation of the Wedding Vow by Abel Korzeniowski got some boost as well from the program components scores that amounted to 47.73. Skating skills and performance received the highest scores on this part with identical scores of 6.08, as the Filipino standout received marks as high as 6.50.
The 2021 Colorado Springs Invitational bronze medalist earlier finished in 23rd after the short program with a total score of 42.97.
Fortunately, her technical score of 24.09 was still above the minimum required score of 23 needed for a spot in the Jr. World Championships. It will take place from March 7-13 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
