AICHI, Japan — Nothing less than the ultimate prize will satisfy Sibol Mobile Legends: Bang Bang as they begin their highly anticipated campaign in the esports event of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026 at Aichi Sky Expo here on Tuesday.
With expectations towering as high as Mount Fuji, the Filipinos refuse to be blinded by the pressure that comes with representing the world’s top MLBB nation, instead setting their sights firmly on a gold medal in the Land of the Rising Sun.
“Gold,” Sibol head coach Allec “SN4P” Alvarado said firmly, not out of arrogance but from the belief that a country that has won the last six Mobile Legends world championships would accept no other outcome.
“There’s always going to be pressure, especially when people have high expectations of you. Being on top has all these expectations. We just have to stay grounded in our values and focus on our daily progress,” he added.
Fortunately, the Philippines is bringing a battle-tested roster that knows how to navigate the brightest lights of the country’s most popular MOBA title without losing sight of what matters, having faced pressure of this magnitude time and again.
And if Sibol, backed by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee, is to turn its golden aspirations into reality, it will need the game’s biggest star to light the way.
Karl “KarlTzy” Nepomuceno, widely regarded as one of the greatest Mobile Legends players of all time, is expected to lead the charge with his trademark aggression, razor-sharp instincts, and a legacy forged through years of unforgettable performances.
Backing him are his Team Liquid PH teammates Sanford “Sanford” Vinuya, Alston “Sanji” Pabico, Dave “Teddy” Viana, and Jaypee “Jaypee” Gonzales, alongside ONIC Esports star Duane “Kelra” Pillas. Together, they bring a wealth of winning experience from both the local and international stages.
The Philippines opens its Group C campaign against Jordan at 2:00 PM before facing Kazakhstan at 5:00 PM. The two unfamiliar opponents could present an element of surprise and make Sibol’s first day a tougher test than expected.
“Against Jordan and Kazakhstan, there could be new heroes that fit the meta, unfamiliarity with playstyles and heroes that we have to face and adapt to on the go, especially since we haven’t been able to scrim with different regions outside of SEA,” said Alvarado.
Sibol, which is also supported by Smart, Cignal, TV5, and Arena Social, spent two days in Tokyo, where support coaches Francis “Duckey” Glindro, Michael “Arcadia” Bocado, and Denver “Yeb” Miranda joined the team for a final camp before heading to Aichi. The brief stop allowed the squad to fine-tune its preparations ahead of the competition.
But in reality, no amount of preparation can completely erase the pressure that comes with being one of the gold-medal favorites — and Alvarado knows that all too well.
Rather than allow the weight of expectations to bear down on his wards, he wants them to harness the pressure and turn it into something they can use to their advantage.
“I think that’s just part of being at the top. We just have to embrace it, use it as motivation, and learn to see the pressure in a more positive way.”
