Following an underwhelming debut last conference, newcomer Shola Alvarez of Galeries Tower believes that the Highrisers are capable of surprising everyone in the Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.
Alvarez, who joined Galeries following the disbandment of F2 Logistics last December, sees great potential in the team during their buildup for the upcoming season-opening conference and hopes that this potential will translate onto the PVL taraflex.
The former Jose Rizal University star also revealed that head coach Lerma Giron has tweaked her system, and the Highrisers are responding very well to it.
“Kaya. Kayang kaya na namin kasi sa mga tuneup games namin, nakikita ko na kayang lumaban ng team. Nakakapag-contribute lahat kada isa, bawat isa sa amin may naitu-tulong talaga sa team,” said the former NCAA MVP.
“So far, sobrang maayos po yung ginagalaw ng team sa mga trainings and tuneup games namin. Maayos naman po yung naging… kasi nagpalit ng sistema si coach Lerma (Giron) so may mga adjustments pa na ginagawa pero kahit papaano naman, nakakapag-adjust naman yung bawat isa,” she said.
Galeries had a subpar PVL debut in the Second All-Filipino Conference, ending up with a 1-11 record after only securing a victory against the winless Gerflor to finish their maiden foray at the 11th spot.
Personally, Alvarez, who admitted that she had a tough time adjusting to Giron’s system, said that she feels right at home with the Highrisers, who welcomed her with open arms since her arrival to the team.
“Yung pag-welcome sobrang saya ko na hindi rin ako nahirapan makisama sa kanila kasi may mga players din na kilala ko na eh. Yung pakikisama, ‘di naman siya naging mahirap,” she said.
“Naging mahirap lang yung adjustment sa system ni Coach Lerma kasi binabago niya yung system, pina-fast play niya lahat ng plays namin. So malaking impact din yun kaya nagiging maganda yung galaw ng bawat isa.”
