After missing on the gold three years ago, Caloy Yulo made sure to claim the still rings gold this time.
The 22-year-old gymnastics star scored 14.400 to capture his second gold of the day and third individual medal of the 31st Southeast Asian Games overall, Sunday at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Dang Nam of Vietnam won the gold in the 2019 edition as Yulo ended with the silver. However, this time it is the 2020 Tokyo Olympian’s turn to snag one on the opponent’s soil.
Nguyen Van Khanh Phong of Vietnam finished second after a step out cost him some points with 13.800. Le Thanh Tung rounded up the podium with 13.500.
Yulo, though, missed a medal on the pommel horse. His initial misstep cost him his execution score of 7.033, for a total of 11.733.
The result saw Yulo as the first Filipino athlete to capture more than three medals in the Games, counting his silver as well in the men’s team. He is expected to add to his haul as apparatus finals continue on Monday.
