Tired of losing, Roma Joy Doromal stepped up to the challenge on Thursday to lead Galeries Tower to its first franchise victory in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference.
Doromal put up one of her best performances in a Highrisers uniform, delivering a game-high 15 points on 10 attacks, three blocks, and two aces.
She helped her side overcome a two-set deficit en route to an 18-25, 24-26, 25-23, 25-18, 15-11 win over Gerflor at the Philsports Arena.
Entering the game with a nine-game losing streak, the former Perlas standout said that she treated the game against the also-ran Defenders as a championship match.
“Syempre unang una, happy ako kasi nanalo kami finally. Siguro yung motivation namin is yung hunger talaga na makakuha ng isang panalo – hindi lang isang set eh, manalo talaga. So, ayun, binigyan namin kayo ng championship, Coach (Lerma Giron). Five sets,” said Doromal.
Doromal played a crucial role in the Highrisers’ climb back from an 0-2 hole. She scored off an over reception to kick-start a 3-0 turnaround that allowed Galeries to force a fourth set.
The National University graduate then mentioned that the team turned to team captain Fhen Emnas for stability, especially in the crucial fifth set.
“Ayun din, na-feel ko din kasi talaga sa sinabi ni Ate Fhen (Emnas) kanina, sa fifth set talaga… Yun nga, may crucial points na error. Pero parang sabi niya, hayaan niyo na yun, wala nang mangyayari dun. Di mo na mababago yun,” said Doromal.
“Yung mababago mo is kung ano yung mangyayari sa susunod. So yun po, tapos nakuha na namin ng three sets, so, parang ayan na eh. Eto na yun, binibigay na sa inyo, kunin niyo na. So yun po yung ginawa namin.”
