For Pia Abbu, there’s no better time to take the leap.
With no more academic units left at the University of Santo Tomas, Abbu is entering the 2025 Premier Volleyball League Draft — believing this is the right move not only for her career but also to give way for the next generation of Golden Tigresses to step up and shine.
“Ayun nga po, since graduating na rin po ako and wala na akong units sa UST, isang reason din po ‘yun bakit napagdesisyunan kong magpa-draft,” shared Abbu.
“Also, marami na rin po kasing aakyat from high school and mga natirang teammates ko, so opportunity din po for them na ma-expose and mag-grow din po sa UAAP,” she added.
But make no mistake, it was not an easy decision for Abbu — especially leaving behind the program that molded her and the teammates who have become like family over the years.
Moreover, she believes it’s time to step out of her comfort zone, a necessary move if she wants to grow and reach the next level of her career.
“Syempre po mahirap din po siya in a sense na ang tagal ko rin po sa UST kasama ‘yung teammates and coaches. ‘Yun nga po, kailangan ko rin mag-grow sa paglabas ko, parang out of my comfort zone po so ‘yun ‘yung naging isang factor,” said the 22-year-old middle blocker.
Now, Abbu is ready to take the biggest step in her young career as she enters the PVL Draft — carrying with her the grit, resilience, and leadership instilled in her during her years with UST.
She feels determined to bring the same passion and work ethic to the next level, wherever she ends up.
“Of course ‘yung experience po talaga. Kasi parang walang katulad din po talaga ‘yung experience na makapaglaro ka sa UAAP na madadala mo going into the higher level,” she said.
“Yung grit and leadership ko na nadala ko from UST. Also, open ako lagi kung ano ‘mang role na ibigay sa’kin, willing ako i-embrace ‘yun and open akong matuto pa sa kung ano ‘mang maibagay sa’kin na role.”
