Philippine basketball legend Carlos ‘Caloy’ Loyzaga has passed away Wednesday morning. He was 85.
Loyzaga, known by his monicker “The Big Difference”, helped give glory to Philippine basketball in the past century.
He was part of many national teams in the which made astonishing accomplishments in the basketball scene.
Perhaps the most memorable was the 1954 FIBA World Championship stint in Brazil, where the Philippines finished with a bronze medal. Loyzaga was named part of the all star 5 selection of that tournament.
Until now, the feat remains the highest and only medal finish by an Asian country in the World Championship.
Loyzaga was also a two-time Olympian, a two-time FIBA Asia Championship gold medal winner and a four-time Asian Games gold medal winner.
He is survived by his wife Vicky and four children: Chito, Joey, Bing and Teresa Loyzaga.
