Dynamic Herb Cebu extended its winning streak to four matches to climb to first place in the 2022-2023 Philippines Football League table courtesy of a 6-2 win over Mendiola 1991, Saturday evening, at the City of Imus Grandstand in Cavite.
Chima Uzoka and JB Borlongan initially gave Cebu a two-goal cushion early in the game. Uzoka broke the deadlock with a left-footed strike in the 17th minute while Borlongan tapped the ball home off a defensive miscue in the 37th minute.
However, just before the halftime break, Mendiola was able to pull one back. Junior Sam was fouled inside the Cebu box and he converted the resulting spot-kick in the 45+2 minute.
Come the second half, Daniel Gadia had the last touch on Arda Cinkir’s initial attempt to restore Cebu’s two-goal cushion in the 50th minute of the match.
Similar to the first half, a moment of inspiration ensued to keep Mendiola in the game. Jimson Crestal unleashed a powerful strike from near the halfway line to pull another goal back in the 64th minute.
That was the closest Mendiola got to salvaging something from the match as Cebu went on a rampage in the last 10 minutes.
Uzoka sealed his brace from close range in the 81st minute while Roberto Corsame Jr completed a late brace in the 86th and 90th minutes to make it an emphatic win for Cebu in the end.
The result means that Cebu is now first in the standings with 17 points behind five wins, two draws, and one defeat.
In contrast, Mendiola is in sixth place with three points on the back of one win and five losses.
