Nonito Donaire outpointed in WBO interim championship bout

Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire gave a good account of himself but it was not enough. Donaire lost via decision (117-111×3) to Carl Frampton in their bout for the WBO Interim Featherweight Championship bout, Sunday morning at the SSE Arena in Belfast Ireland.

After a brilliant 17-year career, the Filipino Flash (38-5, 24 KO) suffered his fifth defeat. This is a huge step back for the four-division world champion as he will have to get back to the drawing board.

Carl Frampton outshone the “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire in a unanimous points win to put himself back in world title contention on Saturday.

Frampton, a two-division champion, was able to pick up steam in the second and third rounds as he was able to connect on his jabs and combinations. This was a build-up to a huge fourth round that saw the Irishman trap his opponent in the corner.

After three huge rounds, Frampton settled to being a counterpuncher. It proved to be an excellent decision as he was able to cut Donaire under his left eye after two huge uppercuts.

Donaire bounced back in the seventh round but Frampton was able to recover in the latter rounds. The Fil-Am’s last gasp happened in the 11th and 12th rounds but proved to be too late.
