Kymani Ladi as good as advertised in Ateneo debut

By: Miguel Caramoan

There was plenty of hype and mystery surrounding Kymani Ladi heading into UAAP Season 88.

Though his stats at Merritt College highlighted him as a lethal scorer and a strong rebounder, Ateneo de Manila University’s decision to join only a handful of local preseason leagues made it difficult to gauge exactly how the 6-foot-8 forward would fare in the UAAP.

In his debut with the Blue Eagles, however, Ladi not only lived up to the expectations — he exceeded them.

The California-born forward poured in 26 points, including a dagger three-pointer with 10.1 seconds left in overtime, and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Ateneo to an 86-83 OT win over Far Eastern University.

“I love the atmosphere here,” said the 25-year-old, Vallejo, California-raised Ladi.

“It’s new, but it’s also exciting because I’ve always wanted to play on a stage like this. Now I have the opportunity, and I’m taking it. It’s great to play in this kind of atmosphere.”

Despite his standout performance, Ladi was quick to share the credit.

Ateneo also received solid contributions from Dom Escobar, who scored 16 points with seven rebounds; and Jared Bahay, who tallied 13 points, five assists, and three rebounds, the latter delivering key baskets in overtime to help rally the team.

“Whenever I get good shots from my teammates, or see them open, I try to hit them as well. It was a good effort from all of us,” Ladi said.

In the US, Ladi competed only in the California Community College Athletic Association, a league for junior colleges.

Playing under the bright lights of the UAAP, he said, was an eye-opening experience — and one he is eager to continue.

“The competition is great. It really tested what I can do and what I can contribute to the team,” he said.

“I’m just trying to give my best every game.”
