Jeremy “The Jaguar” Miado made sure to put on a show to open ONE Championship: Conquest of Champions, Friday evening at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. And his scintillating knockout win was what the hometown crowd needed, as compatriot Rocky Bactol fell to a unanimous decision loss.
Miado blasted Chinese strawweight Peng Xue Wen with an uppercut just 35 seconds into the second round to secure the win, in a match that pitted a striker against a wrestler.
The 25-year-old Filipino needed this victory; he was coming off a loss against Kritsada Kongsrichai last June. Miado is now 8-3 in his prizefighting career, while Peng fell to 3-5.
In a battle between two ONE Warriors Series alumnus, late bloomer Akihiro Fujisawa showcased his experience over Pinoy young gun Bactol, taking a stoppage win late in the third round.
Bactol, who is just 19 years young, showed tremendous heart in the opening round, defending Fujisawa’s well while out-striking the Japanese fighter. However, in the second and third rounds, Fujisawa was able to completely have his way against Bactol, taking his opponent down with ease.
His final takedown with three minutes left in the last stanza proved to be the last straw. The Japanese fighter, who moved to Thailand, rained punches on the gassed Filipino for the stoppage win.
Fujisawa moved to 5-0, while Bactol dropped to an even 1-1.
In the first bout of the evening, Rudy Agustian took home a dominant unanimous decision win over Bangladeshi wushu artist Asraful Islam. Agustian, a flyweight who hails from Indonesia, raised his record to 5-2. Islam remains winless in two bouts.
The big boys also came out to play, as Hideki Sekine and Alexandre Machado duked it out later in the evening.
Sekine – who was in the main event of Age of Domination last 2016 – had his way with Machado to open the bout. But the Brazilian was able to connect on a big shot to open the second round that led to punches on the prone Japanese fighter.
It was a bounce-back win for Machado, who lost to Aung La N Sang to open the year. Machado is now 9-3, while Sekine fell to 7-3, suffering his second straight loss.
In the super series bouts, Han Zi Hao (60-15) made quick work of Azwan Che Wil (35-11) in a muay thai bout. Armen Petrosyan (69-19) lost his second straight fight in Manila as he was overwhelmed by Samy Sana (133-8) in a kickboxing match.
