Gretchel Soltones emerged as the heartbeat of eight-seed Akari, guiding the Chargers to a shocking straight-set victory over top-seeded Farm Fresh, 28-26, 30-28, 25-21, in the 2025 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference quarterfinals on Monday.
Coming off the bench in the second set and starting the entire third, Soltones delivered timely contributions and steady leadership that helped Akari defy expectations and topple the powerhouse Foxies.
Team captain Justine Jazareno was quick to give credit to Soltones for sparking the offense and igniting the team’s fighting spirit — an impact she had consistently provided throughout the elimination round.
“Gusto ko lang din i-commend si Ate Greta [Soltones]… na kumbaga siya yung naging hugot, naging bunot din ni Coach T (Salak),” said Jazareno, who herself shone with 21 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions.
Replacing the returning Ivy Lacsina, Soltones contributed 10 points and six excellent digs, delivering in crucial moments and proving why her experience remains invaluable to Akari.
Beyond statistics, Jazareno emphasized how Soltones’ leadership, paired with the team’s constant reminders from Akari management, helped the Chargers stay focused.
“And I think one thing din na nandidito kami sa punto na ito is nga yung laging nire-remind sa amin na parang nasa tama na kami, bakit bababa pa kami sa mali,” said the Alas Pilipinas libero.
“‘Yun yung lagi kong naaalala, which is galing sa owner namin, yung Akari. Kaya yun yung naging mindset din namin ngayon.”
