Healthy Alex Eala sets sights on Toronto after historic WTA Tour breakthrough

There will be little time for celebration for Alex Eala.

Fresh off the biggest victory of her career at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open, the Filipina tennis star said she is feeling healthy and ready to carry her momentum into the WTA 1000 National Bank Open in Toronto, where she begins her campaign on Wednesday after receiving a first-round bye.

Eala arrives in Canada on the heels of a remarkable week in Washington, where she overcame one of the toughest draws on the WTA Tour to capture her maiden tour-level title.

The 21-year-old became the first Southeast Asian to win a WTA 500 event after rallying from a set down to defeat World No. 3 and top seed Jessica Pegula, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in a final that stretched across two days because of persistent rain.2026-DC-Open-Alex-Eala-champion Healthy Alex Eala sets sights on Toronto after historic WTA Tour breakthrough News Tennis - philippine sports news

The triumph served as redemption for Eala, who endured one of the most painful losses of her career just over a year earlier when she let four championship points slip away in the final of the 2025 Eastbourne Open.

This time, neither a 23-hour rain delay nor one of the world’s best players could keep her from finally lifting her first WTA trophy.

Despite the physical and emotional demands of her title run, Eala said she came out of the tournament feeling stronger than when she entered it.

“So many takeaways from this tournament,” Eala said after the championship. “I think I ended the tournament in better shape than I started. Each match I kept improving and kept learning things about myself. So it definitely gives me a lot of confidence.

“It’s really nice to see all the things that I’ve been working on off court and during training being implemented in matches.”

That confidence was built against one elite opponent after another.

Eala opened her campaign by rallying past 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen before defeating former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez.

She then stunned second seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals, dispatched third seed Naomi Osaka in the semifinals, and completed her dream run by toppling Pegula in the championship match.

Reflecting on the path she had to navigate, Eala admitted it was one of the toughest weeks of her career.2026-DC-Open-Alex-Eala-celebration-scaled Healthy Alex Eala sets sights on Toronto after historic WTA Tour breakthrough News Tennis - philippine sports news

“It was a very steep hill,” she said. “Coming into the tournament, I knew that the competition was super strong and my draw was quite tough. Every match was just a different set of obstacles. So I’m really, really proud. I think I encountered my fair share of obstacles this week.

“I was so nervous and I kind of just blacked out,” Eala recalled after the championship point.

“Everything just came rushing to me. I was really nervous before the last couple of points, and I was really trying to channel those nerves into hitting good balls and moving my feet. So, yeah, a huge burst of emotions.”

The title further cemented Eala’s growing reputation as one of the tour’s most dangerous giant killers.

With the victory over Pegula, she improved to nine wins in 13 career matches against Top 10 opponents while avenging her semifinal loss to the American at the Miami Open earlier in the season.

Now, the focus quickly shifts to an even bigger stage.

Eala begins her National Bank Open campaign in the second round in Toronto, hoping to ride the confidence gained from the breakthrough week in Washington into another deep run at the WTA 1000 level.
