For the sixth time in just eight matches against Top 10 opponents this year, Alex Eala has emerged victorious.
Two of those wins have come against Elina Svitolina.
Eala once again weathered a stern test before defeating the second-seeded Ukrainian, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open on Saturday morning (Philippine time).
Svitolina, currently World No. 10, was eager to avenge her straight-set loss to Eala in the quarterfinals of the WTA 500 Berlin Tennis Open last June, where the Filipina prevailed by the same 6-3, 6-4 scoreline.
Instead, Eala made another statement. She also booked her third semifinal appearance of the season after reaching the final four of the WTA 250 ASB Classic in January and the WTA 500 Berlin Open in June.
The 20-year-old from the Rafa Nadal Academy came out firing, converting her second break point in a grueling opening game that featured five deuces. Svitolina immediately responded by breaking back in the second game to level the set at 1-1.
The next three games followed a similar pattern, with both players trading service breaks. Eala was the first to finally hold serve, taking a 4-2 lead. Svitolina answered with a hold to trim the deficit to 4-3 and appeared poised to draw level after earning three break points in the eighth game.
But Eala showcased her trademark resilience, erasing a 0-40 deficit to hold serve for a 5-3 advantage. That momentum swing proved decisive, as she broke Svitolina once more to close out the opening set in 43 minutes.
The former World No. 3 looked poised to force a decider after racing to a 2-0 lead in the second set and maintaining a two-game cushion through the early stages.
Once again, however, Eala found another gear.
She broke Svitolina in the sixth game before reeling off four of the next five games to turn a 2-4 deficit into a 5-4 lead. Svitolina managed one final hold to stay level at 4-4, but Eala refused to let the match slip away. She swept the final two games to seal the victory in one hour and 34 minutes.
Svitolina had advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye and defeating qualifier Polina Kudermetova in straight sets.
Eala, meanwhile, navigated a far more daunting path. She upset former World No. 2 and Paris Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen in the opening round, before dethroning defending champion Leylah Fernandez in the Round of 16.
The road gets even tougher from here.
Standing between Eala and her second WTA final appearance is third seed and four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. The semifinal showdown will mark the first career meeting between Eala and the former World No. 1 from Japan.
