Taking to the clay courts of the Olivarez Sports Center last January 10, the motivated squads of both UST and De La Salle University opened the UAAP Season 77 Tennis Championship.
Out to draw first blood, both the Golden Tennisters and the Green Tennisters gave it all they’ve got to bag the season’s first tennis victory. Ultimately, the squad from España came out on top as they finished the match with a close 3-2 victory against the Taft-based team.
Initially failing to bag a win against De La Salle’s LA Cañizares who came out on top against UST’s Francis Lanzado in a close 7-6, 6-4 matchup, the UST’s squad blasted through DLSU’s Kyle Parpan who was brought down by Bernanlou Bering in a 3-6, 3-6 match while DLSU’s two doubles teams, Gorospe-Sy and Pantua-Allian, were dispatched by Joel Cabusas and Leroy Bering, 0-6, 5-7, and Jeff Patiño and Alfrancis Potutan, 5-7, 3-6, respectively.
While too late to make a difference, DLSU’s Alberto Villamor nevertheless succeeded in defeating UST’s Hakeem Cariga in a 6-3, 6-4 finish to avenge his team’s loss.
