The players called, and the Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas, Inc. listened
As collegiate players and coaches called the Manila timeouts for the Women’s Volleyball National Team “ill-timed”, LVPI acting president Peter Cayco confirmed that there will be a separate tryout for both UAAP and NCAA players after their respective seasons.
Coaches like National University and San Sebastian’s Roger Gorayeb, and University of the Philippines’ Jerry Yee, pointed out that the tryouts run right into their team’s preparation for the UAAP and the on-going NCAA, expressing that their players will not be fully committed to the National Team tryouts.
While National Team head coach Francis Vicente has already made considerations for players who cannot fully commit to the tryout, Cayco took it a step further, creating a different tryout at a yet-to-be-announced date.
“I already talked with coach Francis, we agreed that for those who expressed their desire to tryout, we’ll arrange a tryout for them at a different date. Even the school officials were appealing to me,” Cayco told Tiebreaker Times.
“But they want the commitment now so we’re asking the players to register.”
Commenting on the timing of the tryouts, Cayco stressed that it is necessary that the National Team progresses quickly and immediately.
“We’re following the calendar of the Asian Games and SEA Games so we really couldn’t hold off the tryouts any longer,” he added.
The last day of the Manila tryouts is on Tuesday, January 31. Players from Cebu and Davao will get their shot in February.
