Columbian may have earned a shocking win over San Miguel in their 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup encounter on Sunday evening, but they cannot quite celebrate their victory.
Fears abounded among the Dyip, since forward Jackson Corpuz might have suffered a serious knee injury.
During one sequence in the fourth canto, Corpuz received Rashawn McCarthy’s pass from halfcourt and took a shot near the rim. Unfortunately, he then landed awkwardly, causing him to fall to the ground writhing.
Corpuz needed assistance to return to the bench. He left at the 8:50-mark and, regrettably, never came back.
“Pinasa lang sa akin, tapos pagbagsak ko, may naramdaman na agad ako,” said the former PBA D-League standout.
“‘Di ko alam. Basta pagbagsak ko, may naramdaman na ako.”
Asked about the initial diagnosis, Corpuz said that team doctors informed him that it was a sprain. But he’s complaining of something different, particularly at the back of his left knee.
“Sabi naman sprain, pero ‘pag tinatanong ako, ‘di ko siya magalaw eh.
“Everytime na nilalakad ko, parang may naghihiwalay, may sumasabit. Namamaga na nga eh,” the product of Philippine Christian University described.
Still, Corpuz’s absence hardly affected Columbian as they stunned San Miguel, 134-132. He felt bittersweet with the outcome, saying it would’ve been better if he played.
“Masaya na malungkot kasi panalo nga, na-injure naman ako. Iba pa rin yung naglalaro ako na kasama ako doon,” said Corpuz, who left with seven points, five rebounds, two blocks, and a block.
Corpuz immediately rushed to the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City after the match for further treatment. He now hopes that the injury is nothing serious.
“Sana hindi malala.”
