The PBA Commissioner’s Office has suspended Calvin Abueva for one game for showing unsportsmanlike conduct during Magnolia’s Season 48 Philippine Cup game versus Ginebra last Sunday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.
Abueva has been penalized for flashing the middle finger during the said game, an action deemed inappropriate and in violation of league regulations.
The incident took place with just under two minutes remaining in the first quarter of the match, which the Hotshots eventually lost, 87-77.
As a result of the suspension, Abueva will be sidelined for Magnolia’s upcoming game against NLEX this Saturday at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Additionally, he has been fined P20,000 for his actions, with stiffer penalties to be issued should he repeat the same offense in the future.
“Si Calvin Abueva, isinuspinde ko ng one game, at [pinagmulta ng] 20,000 pesos na fine,” Commissioner Willie Marcial announced Wednesday during the halftime break of the Terrafirma-Meralco match at the Big Dome.
“‘Pag inulit pa niya ‘yun, sinabi ko sa kanya, dadagdagan ko suspension niya, dadagdagan ko rin ‘yung fine niya. Sabi niya hindi na raw niya uulitin.”
It was just last February when Abueva was made to pay a P100,000 fine for mocking the physical disability of San Miguel Beer head coach Jorge Gallent during Game 2 of the Season 48 Philippine Cup Finals.
That same game held at the Mall of Asia Arena also saw Abueva get into a shouting match with the wife of Mo Tautua’a while on his way out of the venue.
Abueva’s wife got involved in the incident that saw him challenge his former Gilas teammate to a fistfight although no such thing happened.
