For the first time in 49 years, the Philippine national anthem played in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.
Caloy Yulo put on a masterpiece of a performance during the floor competition. And his reward was gold pn Saturday evening (Manila time) in Stuttgart, Germany.
Performing second to the last, the 19-year-old Filipino needed to overcome 2017 silver medalist Artem Dolgopyat’s 15.200 score.
And Yulo did just that, tallying 6.500 in difficulty and 8.800 in execution to top the Israeli and win gold.
Last year’s world champion Artur Dalaloyan of Russia did not make it to the podium.
Back in 2018, Yulo finished third in the event.
This comes after Yulo qualified for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics last Tuesday. He also finished in 10th during the all-around competition.
