Behind Amy Sayer’s impressive performance, the Australia Under-23 Matildas finally barged into the win column with a 4-0 victory over Indonesia, Friday night, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
The 20-year-old forward scored past Indonesian goalkeeper Prihatini in the 10th, 12th, 15th, and 43rd minutes to put coach Melissa Andreatta’s team in cruise control for the rest of the game.
“I think the win was coming,” said Andreatta. “I think the performance in the first game and the second probably deserved more than what we got and we just keep believing in what we want to do.”
“What I’m really proud of is the resilience of this group. There’s been a lot of players very unwell. We had to put a team out there today. The players who were available… they went and did the job today.”
The result means that the Matildas U23 increases their tally to 4 points in Group A while Indonesia has to make do with one point after three matches.
Both teams will return to action on Sunday in the same venue. Australia goes up against Singapore at 4:00 PM while Indonesia takes on host nation Philippines at 7:00 PM.
Australia XI: James (GK, C), Nash, Mcnamara, Tonkin, Galic, Davidson, Sayer, Lowry, Zois, Apostolakis, Karic.
Indonesia XI: Prihatini (GK), Rumbewas, Safitri, Ramadhani, Wetipo, Suandi, Kayla, Kartini, Maesyaroh ©, Nadila, Awi.
