Kylie Yap’s intervention proved to be the difference maker as the Philippine Under 20 Women’s National Team held on to a 1-0 win over Laos in the 2024 AFC U-20 Women’s Asian Cup qualification tournament in Vientiane.
The Filipino-American standout gave coach Nahuel Arrarte’s side the lead in the 42nd minute with a good finish from close range off a set piece.
Yap’s goal gave the Filipinas something to hold on to after goalkeeper Kaiya Jota was dismissed beforehand for handling the ball outside the box.
The result meant that the Philippines got its first 3 points in the campaign while host nation Laos is bottom of the group.
Unfortunately for the Filipinas, China’s 6-0 win over Hong Kong earlier today meant that the Chinese would be the ones who will move to the next round after they accrued two straight wins with a goal difference of +12.
The Filipinas will end their Group A campaign by taking on Hong Kong this Sunday at 8:30 PM Manila time.
