The Bandwagon Wire Says:
The team’s moniker can’t help but remind us of the
OOOHHHH WHAT A RUSH!
With that settled, Road Warrior Rock (Taulava) who we think is turning 30 this year (41 for us mortals) is retiring with an MVP team, the company he started with. Taulava seems happy with the NLEX team and we hope that he stays there to end his career.
The 30 year old RW Rock, again 41 for all of us, had an amazing 2013-14 run with the Express averaging 14.75 points (7th in the league), 12.38 rebounds (2nd in the league), 0.62 blocks (12th in the league) and had a total of 22 double-doubles (3rd in the league). But the most surprising statistic of them all is that RW Rock played a total of 1509 minutes in 40 games. That’s an average of about 37 minutes per game (1st in the league).
With no signs of slowing down, Taulava is poised to have a better 40th season. (So technically, Taulava is just a year older than the league.)
Solid starting five
The other road warriors accompanying Road Warrior Rock will be Aldrech Ramos (we can’t believe that the trade between Ramos and Vic Manuel was actually… FAIR!), KG (Nino Canaleta), Mac “Captain Hook” Cardona, and solid floor captain Jonas Villanueva.
It still boggles our mind that the Road Warriors traded Kevin Alas away for KG but, after much reasoning, maybe the Road Warriors needed someone who is a proven player rather than take a risk with a promising Alas. Moreover, the Road Warriors need more from Captain Hook to stay afloat in the league. Ever since his stay with the Meralco Bolts, his averages are dropping as the years go by as seen in this table:
Mac Cardona | 2010-11 | 2011-12 | 2012-13 | 2013-14 |
PPG | 18.7 | 15.8 | 14.1 | 9.86 |
Being just 32 years young, Captain Hook needs to find his old form to give this team a chance at becoming a contender.
2014 Philippine Cup Prediction
Sans injury, the team will not be part of the bottom third of the league. The Road Warriors is not a team to be ignored by the upper echelon of teams. This team can upset anyone at any given time but the lack of a solid bench will hinder the team of a championship goal.
Our prediction: 8th place after the elimination round, eliminated in the wildcard phase
