The Tanduay Rhum Masters bucked their poor start and torched the Gamboa Coffee Lovers as they went on an intoxicating 53-point, third quarter explosion to claim the 113-71 victory, Tuesday afternoon at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Rhum Masters came out off the halftime break firing, stringing 23 straight points to start the third period and tally the most points in a quarter in PBA D-League history, as they tilted a 37-34 deficit at the half to a commanding 87-49 advantage.
Tanduay leaned on the trio of Von Tambeling, Lester Alvarez, and Paul Varilla as they went 21-of-26 from the field and secured their third straight win to move to joint second place at 3-1.
“Si Von Tambeling talaga ang spark namin. Di ko siya pinalaro ng first half, pero ang ganda ng pinakita niya para sa amin. Nakita namin yung energy na nawawala noong first half,” said coach Lawrence Chongson.
Tambeling fired all of his 13 points in the period, on top of three rebounds, and two assists.
Alvarez topped the Rhum Masters with 17 markers, 10 of which coming in the third quarter, alongside 11 assists and three boards, while Varilla got 15 points in the same frame, to go with two rebounds and two dimes.
Emil Palma also registered 17 markers and eight assists, Adrian Santos had 15 points and eight boards, and Paul Sanga fired 13 for Tanduay, as they made the most of the rout and led by as high as 44, 113-69, late in the game.
Ken Acibar commanded the skidding Gamboa (1-4) with 16 points and seven rebounds in the game against his former squad. Mike Parala tallied 12 markers and seven boards, while playing-coach Leo Avenido had 11 poits and five rebounds.
Tanduay will have a nine days to prepare as they look to snap the four-game winning streak of the Flying V Thunder on Thursday, July 6, at 5:00pm. Gamboa Coffee, on the other hand, hope to break out of their four-game skid when they face the AMA Online Education Titans on Tuesday, July 4, at 3:00pm. Both games will still be played at the Ynares Sports Arena.
