It takes a lot of gall to say that La Salle’s Majoy Baron does not deserve to win Most Valuable Player. But there are still people who bravely raised their eyebrows when Baron was announced as the Season 79 MVP.
But Baron is used to criticism. Playing for the De La Salle University Lady Spikers, she has absorbed greater pressure than chatter from a few pundits and fans.
Still, the soft-spoken 21-year-old chose to take the high road when it came to her detractors.
“Gaya nga po nang sabi ko, nire-respect ko naman po yung opinion ng mga tao, and iniisip ko na lang po na mas marami pa rin yung masaya na nakuha ko ito kaysa po yung hindi masaya,” La Salle’s middle blocker shared as she clutched her MVP trophy.
“Actually, wala naman po akong kailangang i-prove. Naglalaro po ako para sa teammates ko, sa buong La Sallian community, and para po sa coach ko. So sila po yung mga taong nagma-matter sa akin. So inaalis ko lang po yung mga negative sides.”
If the stats are not enough, then Baron’s performance in La Salle’s Finals sweep of the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles should silence even the loudest of critics. After two losses in the elimination round, La Salle got it done when it mattered most.
Ever down-to-earth, the 5-foot-11 spiker was happy to give senior Kim Fajardo a proper send off.
“Yun din po ang motivation namin, since natalo nila kami nung elims.
“Hindi lang naman po yun ang pinaka-importanteng game. This Finals, pinakita po namin yung talagang team namin, and for Ate Kim din po kaya kami naglaro with everything we have,” the Concepcion, Tarlac-native declared.
