La Salle earns first win in surprising sweep of UP

Having played inconsistently through their first two matches, the De La Salle University Green Spikers mustered a tremendous outing, sweeping the then-undefeated University of the Philippines Maroon Spikers 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 for their first UAAP Season 79 win at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

The Green Spikers, who lost their first two outings in disappointing fashion, matched the Maroons’ intensity and used loaded serves to get break points. La Salle won a steady trade in points to open the match, getting a backrow hit from Raymark Woo to cap the set. The next two sets saw La Salle establish big leads, stifling UP’s offense.

“Masaya ako kasi nanalo na ulet sa pagbalik ko sa UAAP,” said La Salle head coach Nes Pamilar. “Maraming naging problema noong unang dalawang laro namin. Maganda kasi ngayon nakita ‘yung response nang mga bata.”

After a lackluster first two outings, Season 78 Best Scorer Raymark Woo tallied 18 points on 18-for-31 attacking. Raffy Del Pilar, Cris Dumago, and Arjay Onia each tallied nine markers.

La Salle (1-2) next take on the National University Bulldogs (2-1) on Sunday, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Open hitter Alfred Valbuena led the Maroons with 17 points, while skipper Wendel Miguel added eight markers.

UP (2-1) aim to bounce back against the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers (2-1) also on Sunday.
