Fil-Am Munzon ‘shocked’ after release from Saigon

Out of nowhere

22-year-old Joshua Munzon was one of the few bright spots of the Saigon Heat’s 2016-17 campaign in the ASEAN Basketball League. Currently, the Heat are at the bottom of the standings with a 1-6 slate, but the Filipino-American has been delivering on a nightly basis with norms of 18.2 points — a stat that shot up after a 34-point outburst against Kaohsiung early this January — 2.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 4.1 steals in their seven games.

It came as a surprise that Munzon was released by the Vietnam-based club team Tuesday afternoon. And no one was more surprised than Munzon himself, who had received the news when he was back home in California.

“I was shocked, this definitely came from left field,” Munzon, who stands at 6-foot-5, told Tiebreaker Times.

“It’s something that I didn’t see coming and I’m sure nobody else saw coming.”

Though the product of California State University-Los Angeles did not want to comment further on the matter, he remains upbeat about what the future brings — especially after thrilling the Filipino audience last Friday during their away game against Alab Pilipinas.ABL-2017-Alab-Pilipinas-vs.-Saigon-Heat-Joshua-Munzon-4430 Fil-Am Munzon 'shocked' after release from Saigon ABL Basketball News - philippine sports news

“I’ve been talking to a couple different ABL teams and also TBL [Thailand Basketball League] teams. I got a couple of offers but I’m going to make up my mind on what I want to do soon,” the ABL’s league-leader in steals added.

And he is not shutting his doors on a possible stint in the PBA D-League as well.

“I’ll weigh my options first and go from there. But definitely get in the D-League first, and hopefully move forward from there,” the Filipino-American added.
